MEET Dante Sweeney-2026 Scholarship recipient

I have lived in Jefferson County my entire life, starting in Groves, then Beaumont, and even Port Neches for a bit. I am one of twelve kids, and I am the fourth oldest. I am ready to take this step in my life. I have already been accepted into the Honors College at Sam Houston State University and would be pursuing a degree in Biology, but if I attend SHSU, I will pursue a degree in Biomedical Sciences. My family is unable to support me in my college pursuits, and being awarded this scholarship would mean that I am one step closer to proving to my younger siblings that an upper-level education is not impossible.
Thank you,
Dante Sweeney

Lauren Abigail (Abby)
Hoffpauir- 2017 Recipient

Abby graduated from Port Neches-Groves High School and received the Jefferson County Area Go Texan scholarship in Spring 2017 as well as the $20,000 Houston Live Stock Show & Rodeo scholarship.
"I went on to graduate from the University of Texas at Austin in 2021 with a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology with a Pre-Health Professions Certificate and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. I began medical school at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in the summer of 2022. I have just completed my first round of licensing boards and am beginning my clinical rotations in Corpus Christi next month! I’ll graduate in May 2026 to begin my career as a medical doctor.
Receiving the Area Go Texan scholarship was such an honor, privilege, and a blessing. Initially, it was a validation and acknowledgment of my efforts to do well in school so that I could pursue higher education. As a first generation college student, it was pertinent to receive financial assistance to be able to attend my dream school of UT Austin. Further, I knew that my goal of becoming a doctor would require a longer educational path, and thus more financial burden. My Area Go Texan scholarship from the HLSR helped me to graduate from undergrad debt free. This has lessened the stress associated with finances so that I can better focus on my studies. I am better equipped to be the best doctor I can be because of the help I received from the HLSR Area Go Texan scholarship."
