BEAUMONT, TX - The Jefferson County Go Texan Committee, a subcommittee of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, announced its annual scholarship recipients Thursday morning. This year’s 45 recipients represented an array of schools across Jefferson County and surrounding areas.
“What an amazing cross-section of students,” said Clint Burges, Jefferson County Go Texan Ambassador. “We have representation from nearly every school in Jefferson County.”
This year the committee will disperse $83,000 to the local youth of Jefferson County. With today’s numbers, Jefferson County Go Texan has given out roughly $862,000 and affected roughly 250+ students in Jefferson County.
Jefferson County Go Texan has received enough money from the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo to award two $20,000 scholarships. Sergio Mendez of Nederland and Victoria Guitierrez of Bob Hope will receive scholarships. Each of the 68 participating Area Go Texan counties awards a scholarship to one of its respective graduating high school seniors. An additional ten awards are given at large to eligible students within these counties, of which Jefferson County was one.
“We’ve been blessed with great donors, sponsors, and community stakeholders who have helped drive our mission. To give out such a large number, we rely on those folks heavily,” said Burges. “I just can’t thank our friends and family enough who help drive our mission.”

About Jefferson County Go Texan Committee
Jefferson County has been involved with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo since 1972 and is one of the original counties to participate in the Go Texan program. Over the years, the program has grown, and many activities have been added, such as competing in the World’s Championship Barbecue Cook-Off held annually at the Houston NRG Park complex.
The Jefferson County Go Texan organization devotes its efforts annually to helping area youth. Through their association and participation with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, area youth are granted scholarships each year.
In 2021, 11 Jefferson County students were awarded $72,500 in college scholarships, with funds coming from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and from Jefferson County Go Texan, Inc. The organization is a nonprofit corporation chartered as a charitable organization emphasizing scholarships.
